Telecoms Timing Solutions: Lab-Proven Modernisation with Remote Assurance

Case Study

Your legacy timing equipment is quietly putting your network at risk.

Why timing matters in telecoms

Telecoms networks do not stand still and timing rarely fails loudly. It drifts, degrades and can create intermittent faults that are difficult to reproduce. Strong Timing Solutions reduce that risk and help keep services stable as the network evolves.

The situation

A UK telecoms operator needed its timing and synchronisation capability modernised due to the use of too much legacy equipment. They wanted to support growth and ongoing network change within their organisation, one problem…it had to be done without disruption. The priority was to switch the networks over without any disruption, this meant a controlled change window was needed with an outcome that was tested before-hand so we could predict the behaviour for afterwards and also to prevent any surprises.

The Edge approach

Firstly we focus on the client and their networks needs, not hardware – this is because we are vendor-agnostic, allowing us to be natural and put the client and their needs first. We reviewed the existing timing distribution, it allows us to map out dependencies across the network. Then we defined what “healthy” looked like in production. That included stability, resilience and clear monitoring of the network post operation.

Reference lab staging and testing

Before any field activity, we staged the configuration in our in-house reference lab. This removed risk before going live because we did not want any surprises when we switch the network over from legacy to the new hardware. We validated synchronisation and timing behaviour under expected conditions along with checking failover and recovery scenarios (just in case). This ensured telemetry and alerting were practical for telecoms operations.

Deployment and remote assurance

Only after lab sign-off did we implement the modernised timing configuration. This took place within an agreed change window between us and our client. After the change, we provided remote monitoring and management of the timing infrastructure. This confirmed stability over time, it also helped spot anomalies early while reducing operational load for their network team. We covered everything end-to-end meaning the client has a single point of contact for everything, streamlining the process and removing hassle and stress from their side.

Outcome

A stronger timing foundation was delivered without disruption. Visibility improved across the timing layer with confidence increased in synchronisation health. For telecoms operators, this means fewer surprises and diagnosis is faster. The timing layer supports growth, rather than becoming a hidden risk. The client opted in for our support package as 24/7 support and help (if needed) – this gave them a blanket in case anything else happened where they needed help from an expert team, along with giving them an insurance policy on their timing and synchronisation network.

One Year Later…

The client has continued with their tailored SLA, designed specifically around their requirements, just as we do for every client. Their network remains healthy, supported by continuous remote monitoring from our HQ to help identify and address any issues before they become a problem.

Since then, the client has expanded into two additional global sites. As part of that growth, their SLA has also been extended to cover those locations. We also provided a solution that enabled them to meet local and national regulatory requirements, while maintaining compliance in the UK and across their wider global network.

When organisations look to grow and expand, especially in the telecoms sector, timing sits at the heart of that journey. So why take the risk?

Network Architect (Client Employee) – “After exploring the market and considering delivering the upgrade internally, finding Edge Networks was a real turning point for us. They brought together network engineering, project management, and global logistics under one roof, at a fraction of the cost an equivalent in-house team would have required.

Their multi-vendor expertise helped us focus on what was genuinely best for our network, while their in-house reference lab reduced risk significantly by allowing testing and validation before rollout. That support helped us avoid the issues we almost certainly would have faced trying to manage the project ourselves.

Their tailored SLA and ongoing support have also made a real difference to our organisation. We simply do not have the internal resource to manage that alongside the wider demands of the network, so having that support in place has reduced pressure on our team and given us far greater peace of mind.

Having one trusted partner and a single point of contact made the entire experience simpler, smoother, and far more effective.”
